Shimamaki Snowcats

Experience cat skiing at our Shimamaki location and get ready to ride untouched powder in the Karibayama mountain range!

Our season runs for 10 weeks with a 12 guest max per trip. This exclusive cat skiing experience means we book up early each season and the snow will be plentiful every run. Our season starts as soon as we hit a 2 meter base at our 650m day base camp. By mid February, as storms roll in almost daily from the Sea of Japan we are typically skiing on a 5 meter base.

Terrain

The Shimamaki cat skiing zone reaches up to 1,520 meters  at the top of Mt. Kariba and runs descend an average of 450 vertical meters. The terrain is a mix of open alpine bowls and perfectly spaced trees. Slopes range from 15-35 degrees (a typical resort black run is 32º). On average guests ski and ride 4,000 vertical meters of powdery snow. As with any cat ski terrain the amount of runs/day depends on weather, avalanche conditions, and the groups ability level.

Lodging

This trip is a unique package, blending deep powder skiing with a rich cultural experience. For 2 nights you will be staying in the sleepy, coastal village of Shimamaki, a two hour drive Southwest of Niseko. The area is famous for big mountains, trophy salmon fishing, and an abundance of seafood. At the end of each day you can relax at your accommodations in the rustic, yet charming Motta Onsen or Chihasegawa Onsen hot spring lodges. At these traditional Japanese lodges guests indulge in fresh local seafood dishes, and enjoy Japanese beer and sake. Accommodations are based on 1-2 guests to one traditional ryokan room, complete with bamboo mats and futon cushions.
