Backcountry Equipment

On most of our trips backcountry safety equipment (beacon, probe, shovel) and a backpack that can carry skis/boards is required. If you've got your own and can travel with it, please do; otherwise we have all of the necessary equipment to keep you safe and mobile in the backcountry. Please note on backcountry (hiking accessed) trips, touring equipment (snowshoes + poles or skins + touring bindings depending on which team you play for) is also needed.

Be Prepared

Headed into the backcountry on your own? Remember that as soon as you leave the designated ski runs there is no patrol and no avalanche control (areas accessed via Niseko's gate system included) and you should be prepared for self rescue at any time. If you don't have the necessary equipment, we offer the the same rates as above to all visitors, even those not booked on our trips.

Please note that in busy times, priority will go to guests booked on our guided trips and that the equipment is available on a first come, first serve basis (no reservations). Please note that while carrying this equipment is one of the most basic requirements for safe backcountry travel it is useless without knowledge of how to use it. Even more importantly it is critical that you have the experience and skill to travel safely in avalanche terrain on your own before venturing into the backcountry. BDTours accepts no responsibility for decisions you may make or situations / incidents that may occur in the backcountry while travelling with our rental gear. Any advice or tips offered by BD staff at the time of rental are no replacement for your own sound judgement and experience.

If you are unfamiliar with this equipment or uncomfortable accepting these risks on your own, join us on a backcountry tour or get educated with one of our Avalanche Skills Training course. Whether on a course or guided tour, our experienced guides will explain the gear, ensure you are skiing in safe terrain and offer a wealth of information to get you started in the backcountry
